The old medieval town of Sveti Lovreč lies in west-central Istria and takes its name from the small 8th-century church of St Lawrence. Settled since prehistoric times, it has many historic buildings, and its layout and old town wall date from the 9th century. In the early Renaissance it was a military town and seat of the military command for southern Istria.
Its rich architectural heritage and inland location suit anyone who wants to get to know the traditions and history of the region. Do visit Vrsar and the old towns of Rovinj and Poreč, and inland Dvigrad, Kanfanar, Baderna, Tinjan, Višnjan and Žminj.
It is also an ideal base for cycling and walking past sheep and goat pastures, small fields, meadows, woods and olive groves, away from the tourist centres. The beaches of Poreč and Vrsar are about 15 to 20 minutes by car and Rovinj about 20 to 25 minutes.
The Lim Channel is only a few kilometres away. It is part of the 35 km Limska draga valley, which stretches almost to Pazin. The channel is about 10 km long, lined on both sides by steep slopes up to about 200 m high.
