The town grew up on a small island that was only joined to the mainland in the 18th century. In its 1,700-year history, Byzantines, Ostrogoths, Venetians and Austrians all left their mark on the old town, which is dominated by the 18th-century Baroque church of St Euphemia. The church holds the saint's relics, offers a wonderful view of the sea and islands, and has a bell tower unmistakably reminiscent of St Mark's in Venice. The town museum and many galleries complete the cultural experience.
The seafront promenade and the romantic old town are the heart of Rovinj, with a varied programme of entertainment on summer evenings. The best-known street, Grisia, is lined with art galleries, studios and restaurants, and bars on the water invite you to a sunset cocktail looking out to St Catherine's Island.
There are many lovely beaches and bays along the Rovinj Riviera. Favourites include Balota below St Euphemia's and the beaches of the Golden Cape, such as Lone. You can choose between rocky coves and gently sloping pebble beaches popular with families. Walking, cycling, riding and trekking routes run through the surroundings, and sailors and divers are well catered for too.
