In the north of Istria, above the Mirna valley, stands the medieval town of Motovun, whose skyline is a well-known symbol of inland Istria.
Above it rises the 13th-century Romanesque-Gothic bell tower with its crenellated crown, beside the 17th-century parish church of St Stephen. The central square also has the Romanesque communal palace, surrounded by other historic buildings. Among the many events, the best known is the international Motovun Film Festival in summer.
The Motovun forest along the Mirna valley is famous for truffles. Experts rank Istrian white truffles, in season from September to December, among the best from Italy and France. Opposite Motovun are the picturesque town of Oprtalj and the village of Livade, known for its truffle days in autumn.
Vineyards surround the foot of the hill, growing the best-known Istrian wines, white Malvazija and red Teran, and there are many fine taverns and restaurants nearby. The Istarske toplice thermal spa with its healing springs is also close.
