Fažana's fishing heritage is most alive in the small harbour on the Riva, among the boats and nets. Stroll through the village, enjoy the view from the promenade over to the islands, or take a break on a restaurant terrace.
To discover local art, visit the parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, with “The Last Supper” by Zorzi Ventura from 1598 and a Gothic crucifix, and the Romanesque church of Our Lady of Carmel with its loggia, remains of 15th-century frescoes and a 14th-century statue of the Madonna and Child.
Brijuni National Park
A short boat trip from Fažana's harbour takes you to the park, where almost 700 plant species and about 250 bird species have been recorded. Veli Brijun is the largest of the 14 islands, with dinosaur tracks, remains from antiquity and later centuries. Its rise began in 1893 with the industrialist Paul Kupelwieser, then owner of the islands, who developed an elegant summer and health resort famous across Europe until the Second World War. Later it became known for the political activities of Josip Broz Tito, who first came here in 1947.
A tourist train gives a good first impression, passing the safari park, the Byzantine castrum and the Roman villa in Verige Bay. By the small harbour on Veli Brijun stands the little 15th-century church of St German with an exhibition of Istrian frescoes and copies of Glagolitic inscriptions. Nearby are a natural history collection, the Archaeological Museum and the exhibition “Tito on Brijuni”.
