Nearby are several quiet, hidden bays (Rasotica, Žukovik, Radovnja, Studena, Zvirje and Spilice) with sandy and pebble beaches. In high season a car ferry runs several times a day from the harbour to Makarska.
Brač, the largest island in central Dalmatia, has only about 15,000 inhabitants. Its striking landscape of rugged rocks and green meadows is used for sheep farming, wine, olive oil, sour cherries and almonds, and for quarrying its famous stone.
Brač also has the highest mountain of the Croatian islands, Vidova Gora at 778 m.
